We are currently seeking qualified and highly motivated individuals for the position of Associate Director, Scientific Communication and Medical Education, reporting to the Scientific Publications and Communications Lead within Medical Affairs – Global Rare Disease Business Unit.

This position is an important member of the Medical Affairs team who will execute the medical education and scientific communication strategy for the assigned products. The qualified candidate will coordinate the development of a strategic medical education plan and support the implementation of the corresponding tactical activities. This role is preferably based in our office in Boston, MA, but remote work may be considered.

Main Responsibilities

  • Drive and coordinate the development of a strategic scientific medical education activities and documents including medical affairs training plans in line with the medical affairs plans and scientific communication objectives for the indicated product(s) in Chiesi Rare Disease. 
  • Support the development of the strategic scientific communication plans, narratives and platforms for the indicated product(s).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional members of the Medical Affairs Team to develop the Medical Strategic and Tactical Plan for the indicated product
    • As a Medical Affairs team member, support and contribute to ad hoc Medical Affairs planning initiatives and activities
  • Support/drive medical communication initiatives (e.g. symposia, congress planning and content, independent medical education, advisory boards) that support the medical affairs strategy as needed for the indicated product(s).
  • Contribute to overall congress planning process and strategy for the indicated product, attend relevant scientific meetings/congresses and participate in medical intelligence gathering
  • Provide Medical Affairs team with knowledge and intelligence from scientific congresses, and the literature. Provide support in the review and approval of the medical affairs literature summaries and publication alerts.
  • Manage external medical writing vendors and budget
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders for the successful completion of all communication deliverables.
  • Provide when and where needed medical oversight for scientific review and coordination of approval of communication materials in compliance with corporate standards and government/industry regulations
  • Participate in the development and growth of the scientific communications/publications function, contribute to long-range planning, manage project plans, develop, and manage processes, publication systems

Experience Required

  • PharmD or PhD with 2-3 years of medical affairs experience including publications, medical writing, training, and scientific communications
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills in combination with the ability to critically analyze and summarize data
  • Project planning and organizational skills with experience managing multiple priorities in combination with great attention to detail as well as the ability to prioritize in a changing environment with a sense of urgency
  • Knowledge of relevant publications related industry standards, regulations and guidelines (e.g. GPP3, ICJME), as well as project planning tools and IT systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills in developing and maintaining successful stakeholder relationships (internal and external)
  • Proven ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries
  • Prior experience working on a launch product and in rare disease is preferred


  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited university
  • PharmD or PhD with 2-3 years of medical affairs experience including publications, medical writing, training, and scientific communications
